In her 2017 article, “Being the Only One…” Crystal Yarborough reflects on how therapists and patients struggle to find connections with one another when they possess different social identities, backgrounds, and experiences. This theme, related to cultural enactments, has been visited by several other authors prompting Donna Harris to contemplate why people choose us as therapists and why they stay, especially in mixed race encounters. This interactive colloquium will invite participants to explore patients’ identity-based selection of therapists as well as how we work with cultural enactments.
Donna Harris, an MIP graduate, is an African American social worker with over 30 years of experience providing individual and group psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to adults. She is the Director of Intercultural Counselling, LLC, a private practice located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia and the CEO of Intercultural Network which focuses on helping organizations meet their equity and inclusion goals. Her therapeutic approach is relational with attention given to the impact of systemic and individual racism and oppression. She serves as faculty at Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Service and Social Research and the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia (IRPP) and is visiting faculty at Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. Ms. Harris also serves as President for the Philadelphia Area Group Psychotherapy Society (PAGPS).
