Discipline and Spontaneity in Contemporary Psychoanalysis: Different Perspectives

The Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity in conjunction with The Ferenczi Center will hold a joint half-day conference on Discipline and Spontaneity: Different Perspectives. The conference is designed to investigate how the theoretical frameworks of these two institutes guide their understanding of clinical action and where their traditions converge and diverge.  Previously, there were clearer distinctions between the aims of treatment and the rules of engagement among the emerging contemporary analytic schools.  While today’s relational movement embraces a two-person or multi-person model, important discrepancies remain.  These distinctions inspire us to struggle to find common ground and also to honor the complexity of the various choices that analysts make in their work. In a diverse climate, what are the rules of engagement, if any? What are the aims of the therapeutic encounter? Within the relational model, analysts’ styles vary greatly regarding the pursuit of therapeutic inquiry and interpretation, use of confrontation and empathy, the importance of self-disclosure and privacy, and with the establishment or maintenance of therapeutic boundaries. This multiplicity can be confounding to clinicians struggling to reconcile discipline and spontaneity, and poses a particular challenge for new analysts, bewildered by what appears to be a climate of postmodern deconstruction of both the rules and aims of analysis. We generate this dialogue to further define and expand our work and how we make meaning of it.
