I really should go back and read Selma Fraiberg’s article, Ghosts in the Nursery again as it was such a wonderful paper. I’m glad you mentioned that paper, Blair, because another area in which psychoanalytic theory has influenced me in my work with couples is that of attachment theory and how attachment styles greatly affect the implicit ways of relating that occur in the interactions amongst couples. Knowing about different attachment styles can help in facilitating the development of greater awareness in couples with regard to each partner’s own vulnerabilities as well as the vulnerabilities of the other. Doing this can often open up possibilities that were previously lost because of the nature of position fighting.

And thank you, PJ and Roberto, for taking the time to write what you wrote. Much appreciated!

John, I love the imagery of the lone actor on the stage which is then illuminated to reveal the other actors. It reminds me of the article Ghosts in the Nursery, and how many people from present and past are actually in the room with you. Thank you for writing! I know you utilize so many different theories in your work so I’m looking forward to the next couple of blogs...!
